Why we smoke oak instead of staining it
A stain sits on the surface and wears off unevenly. Smoking changes the timber all the way through. The difference shows up in year three.
Jonas trained as a cabinetmaker in Malmö before studying architecture, and he still judges a detail by whether someone could reasonably build it.
He runs STRATA’s interiors work and the material library on the ground floor of the studio — roughly four hundred samples, each one recorded with where it came from, how it ages, and whether it was worth the carbon. He is responsible for the studio’s position that a surface should be allowed to change.
